Foundation FAQ
Zephyr Cove Tennis Club, Lake Tahoe’s premier public tennis club is run by the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation pursuant to a concession contract with Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department
What is the Foundation’s background?
In September 2013, several members of the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club (ZCTC) began discussing the possibility of improving the “Shack” and providing better bathroom facilities for players. After discussion and support of the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department, along with the Douglas County Public Library, we built a tennis pro shop and obtained access to the library bathrooms.
Because of the need to raise funds for the pro shop and for other short- and long-term goals, the ad hoc tennis group created a nonprofit charitable foundation. The Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation (the Foundation) was registered as a nonprofit organization with the state of Nevada in January 2014, with established Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. The Foundation achieved 501(c)(3) tax exempt status with the IRS later that year.
In 2014, the Foundation obtained the Douglas County concessionaire contract to run the ZCTC for five years, which was renewed for another five years starting in 2019 and again in 2024.
What are the Foundation’s Goals?
The Foundation’s principal purpose is to promote tennis as an enriching, healthy, and lifelong sport to all ages and abilities by providing financial, programming, and organizational support to the ZCTC. As a nonprofit corporation organized pursuant to the provisions of Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 82, the Foundation has no capital stock and no shareholders, and no part of the net earnings, income, or profit of the Corporation shall inure to the benefit of or be distributable to its directors, officers, or other private individuals.
Who makes up the Foundation?
The eleven-member board of directors for the Foundation is made completely of volunteers. The Foundation’s 2023 board of directors are:
Jenny Bentley, Bob Beutenmiller, Janet Blumberg, Ed Crawford, Sheryl Herschman, Chris Kiser, Holly Rittiman, Ross Rittiman, Carolyn Wright, and Joyce Youngs.
No officers or members of the board of directors are compensated for their services to the Foundation.
Three of the directors shall initially serve for two-year terms, four shall serve for three-year terms, and four shall serve for three-year terms. Thereafter, as such initial terms expire, directors shall be elected to serve two-year terms. Thus, three or four of the directorships shall be filled every other year. A director shall be eligible for re-election.
As a Nevada resident who pays taxes, why do I have to pay court fees at ZCTC?
The county made the decision many years ago to charge a concession fee for the tennis courts to assure that the facility is managed during the season, as are Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and other public Lake Tahoe Basin facilities. The concessionaire has the right to collect court and membership fees. The concessionaire manages and maintains the courts and provides for a structured tennis program.
What does the Foundation do with funds collected?
All proceeds collected from memberships, court fees, fundraisers, and donations are used to maintain, enhance, and improve the ZCTC facilities, programming, and community.
What are the Foundation’s long-term goals?
The Foundation and Douglas County desire to maintain, enhance, and improve the ZCTC facility and programming.
